Jewel Inspiration: Neutral Looks Made Easy

No matter what your personal style, its hard to go wrong wearing classic neutrals in the fall. This season's rose gold trend makes it easy to pair a metal with browns.  Rose gold isn't as harsh against the skin as yellow gold, and isn't as tricky to wear with brown as silver. Brassy gold tones and antiqued silver work as well for neutral Autumn looks. Stones like smoky quartz, moss agate, and jasper work wonderfully. You can easily mix and match any of our pairings for a flawless fall look to throw on and go.

Right now I'm loving...Sterling Silver Om Necklace: for a peaceful start to my week!

OM Aum Hindu or Yoga Symbol Antiqued Sterling Silver Medallion Pendant 18" Necklace

...so its about 7:30 on a Sunday night.  I should be getting an early start on work for tomorrow here in my home office.  Instead I'm listening to soundscapes and doing some organic window shopping online.  I call it organic because I'm not looking for anything specific and just letting the tides of the internet move me.  Interestingly enough, I quickly came across this sterling silver Om necklace and decided to share it here.  This particular necklace is available through Silver Insanity on Amazon for 29.98.  I do love the fact that the price includes the sterling silver antiqued 18'' popcorn chain.

I've never owned anything with the om symbol on it, but have always really enjoyed this Hindu sanskrit word meaning "all that is."  The om is said to be the sound of the vibration of the universe reminding us to feel inner peace, oneness, and to be jubilant.  As a sacred symbol, there is some debate on whether it should be worn, however, it seems that many believe it is a symbol to meant be shared and worn as long as the wearer's lifestyle is true to it.  I found this necklace to be simply beautiful for those who seek to embrace the om through yoga and in life in general.

A beautiful video about the concept of Om:

This post goes out to my sister Krista, owner of Madame Marlene jewelry - who truly embraces these concepts!

Don't forget to join us tomorrow for jewelry, tea, and videos! : ) ...another relaxing way to start your week!

What is .925 Sterling Silver? ...A Little History

Sterling silver, as a jewelry material/medium, has had loyal fans for years. These fans might be pretty surprised that I’ve been asked this question many times over the years, which is why I’ve chosen to address it on jewelry dose daily. There are many men and women who are unfamiliar with the meaning of the term “.925 (point 925) sterling silver.”

Pure silver, of course, is an element found on Earth. This element has been mined since the 15th century for its unique properties. Any material made up of 99.9 % silver is considered “pure silver.” Pure silver is so soft that Europeans began combining it with other metals to increase integrity and durability. This was useful in the making of coins. This is why “sterling silver” emerged.

Sterling silver, which is still considered a fine metal, refers to material that is 92.5% silver and 7.5% another metal (usually copper). For those with sensitive skin, it is important to be sure that the sterling does not include nickel.  Quality sterling should not contain any significant amounts of nickel.

Sterling silver, while originally used as currency, became popular for its beauty as an art medium in the mid 19th century, with fine retailers beginning to offer sterling silver flatware, jewelry, pitchers, and other pieces. A .925 Sterling silver craze arose in both the US and Europe in the 1840’s lasting until just after WWII, with popularity peaking in the Victorian era. In 1851, Tiffany and Company was the first US retailer to adopt the sterling standard of 92.5% pure silver, using it to create most of their designs.

.925 Sterling Silver fell out of mainstream favor after WWII when artisan labor became more expensive and lifestyles changed creating a demand for easier to clean flatware. Sterling silver, however, remained a status symbol in jewelry and interior décor. In the 1990’s sterling gained resurgence in mainstream popularity as international trade became common and prices dropped. Although the value of silver continues to increase, Sterling silver remains one the most beautiful and versatile jewelry elements today.

Freebird - simple jewelry for a small town day out!

Freebird, doves, birds of peace, 70's style seagulls...call them what you will but I just think they're always a great casual look.  Today I wore my "soar above it all" stud earrings and "dove love" bracelet both in sterling silver to create a subtle theme without feeling too dressed up!  I topped it off with a conductor cap (easy hair day - $9 at Target) for an all too rare trip to my local mall.  Unfortunately, its extremely rough to get a picture of a bracelet and earrings in the same shot using only one hand and an iPhone 3 camera, but I tried my best.  When it comes to modeling - I'll stick to writing, but I managed to get a couple pictures and even shot (gasp) profile shots.  This shows just how much I love you!  Please be forgiving to the snapshots! <3
